Beaches

Stretching for about 8.5 km along the northern Portuguese coast, from São Paio in the south to Praia da Azurara in the north, the beaches around Vila Chã offer a coastline rich in contrast and natural beauty. While the beaches to the south of Porto are long and uniform, the coastline around Vila Chã is more varied, with sandy bays, rocky coves, rolling dunes, and small fishing villages that give the area its distinctive character.

Some beaches are lively and attract surfers and water sports enthusiasts, while others remain quiet, perfect for long walks, swimming, or simply relaxing by the sea. Wooden boardwalks connect different stretches, making it easy to discover the coast at your own pace. Much of it is part of a protected natural area that safeguards dunes, wetlands, and important habitats for birdlife.

This variety means there is something here for everyone. Families enjoy the calm, accessible sands of Vila Chã, surfers and kitesurfers head to the waves of Mindelo and Azurara, while walkers and nature-lovers find plenty to explore among the dunes and boardwalk trails. History also has a place on this coastline: at Castro de São Paio, the remains of an ancient settlement overlook the sea, a reminder of the deep connection between people and this coastline. And this is exactly what sets the region apart - the simple way it blends everyday traditions with the natural beauty of the coast. Fishing boats are still pulled onto the sand, small cafés and seafood restaurants welcome both locals and visitors, and the rhythm of daily life blends easily with the open landscape of sea. This harmony between village life and nature gives the whole area a character that feels authentic and welcoming, making it a place where guests quickly feel at home.

Praia de Vila Chã

Located right across from the flat, this is the main beach of the village and the centre of local life. Fishing boats are still pulled up onto the sand, while cafés and seafood restaurants along the shore create a welcoming, community atmosphere. It is a Blue Flag certified beach and also holds the Accessible Beach (“Praia Acessível”) flag, meaning it has clean water, safety measures, and facilities for visitors with reduced mobility, making it welcoming for all visitors.

Praia de São Paio & Castro de São Paio

At the southern end of the coastline, these beaches are known for their cliffs, rocky coves, and open views of the Atlantic. Above the shore lies the Castro de São Paio, a Celtic fortified settlement (castro) from the Iron Age, unique in Portugal for its coastal location. Alongside it stands the small chapel of São Paio, adding cultural interest to the natural setting. It’s an ideal spot for photography and short walks, combining history with a distinctive landscape.

These are smaller, quieter beaches that locals often use. With a mix of sand and rocks, they form shallow tidal pools at low tide, which are fun for children to explore. Simple and calm, they’re a good choice if you prefer a more local and less busy atmosphere.

Praia da Congreira, Terra Nova & Laderça

Just north of the village, these beaches are more natural and quiet, offering wide sandy stretches, dunes, and rocky areas. Terra Nova is known for its open sands and is perfect for walks by the water. Laderça is more rugged, with rock formations and pools that appear at low tide, making it fun for children and nature-lovers who enjoy exploring. Congreira, smaller and less frequented, adds another option for those looking to avoid crowds. Together, these beaches provide a calmer alternative to Vila Chã.

Behind the beach lies the Mindelo Ornithological Reserve, an important protected habitat for migratory birds that adds birdwatching and nature trails to the coastal experience.

Praia da Areia & Praia da Árvore

Further north, the beaches of Areia and Árvore form a wide, open stretch of sand bordered by dunes. They are spacious and calm, popular with walkers and families who enjoy the relaxed pace and the natural surroundings. Birdwatchers also appreciate this area for the variety of species that can be spotted in the dunes and nearby wetlands. A campsite provides direct access, making it convenient for longer stays. These beaches are ideal if you are looking for plenty of space, a slower rhythm, and a closer connection to the natural landscape.
